PREVENTION OF INSTITUTIONALISATION

This is a program which offers community based support services to persons with intellectual disabilities who are in danger of being institutionalized.

Many people with intellectual disabilities live at home, with parents or guardians.  Life at home has numerous benefits, the neighborhood and family friends as well as worm relationships.  Usually the problem arises when the child grows into an adult, and the parents have to face the difficult future of their child once they will no longer be able to care for him.  The lack of community based support services leaves them with only one option - placing their child into an institution.

For someone who has always lived at home with his or her family, albeit under difficult conditions, being sent to an institution is both intensely traumatic and a serious violation of human rights.

Therefore we established Multidisciplinary Expert Teams in Zagreb, Bjelovar, Slavonski Brod, Kastav, Pula and Sibenik which provide the support persons with intellectual disabilities need in order to remain living in the local community and among people they know and have relationships with.
We strive to include persons with intellectual disabilities into the work environment, to stimulate appropriate leisure time activities - in other words, to build a circle of support.
