SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT

Supported employment is paid employment where a person with disabilities works in a regular work environment and receives continuous support.  In the beginning the support is provided by a job coach and gradually the coworkers take over the role of providing support to the person.

Since we believe that including people in the community also means finding real jobs and working activities for them, in year 2000 we started the program of Supported Employment. We still remain the only organization in Croatia to provide this service.

Even though persons with intellectual disabilities face many barriers to finding work (no legal ground for this activities, a high unemployment rate in Croatia, prejudice, and limited financial support) we have managed in finding jobs for more than 70 people with intellectual disabilities in Zagreb Osijek Bjelovar Sibenik and Slavonski Brod.

In Croatia there is no legal basis for Supported Employment as a form of employment for persons with intellectual disabilities.  Through this pilot program we are attempting to convince the stakeholders that people with intellectual disabilities are willing and able to work in the open labor market when they receive adequate support.

The person with intellectual disabilities is given direct support during training and performing a work task.  The degree of support is adjusted to the needs of the individual and is present as long as he or she needs support to perform the work task effectively.
