We believe that people with disabilities do not belong in institutions.
In 1997 when we deinstitutionalized the first couple of people from an institution in Croatia, we were determined to create an alternative to institutional care and enable people with intellectual disabilities to remain members of our society. Until the establishment of the Home for Independent Living in year 2000, we were in the greatest part financially supported by the Open Society Mental Health Initiative. In addition to the much needed financial support, the Open Society Mental Health Initiative, and especially Ms. Judith Klein, have provided us with the professional and moral support we very much needed and helped us in our struggles.
We established the first Home for Independent Living in Zagreb in November 1999, and registered it as an institution of social welfare at the Marketing Court in Zagreb on the 20th of April 2000.
The Ministry of Work and Social Welfare signed a contract with the Home for Independent Living and agreed to finance the living costs of the clients in the program of community based supported housing on June 7th year 2000.
In year 2004 the program of community based housing was expanded to Bjelovar.
Until now we have freed almost 140 adults who live in apartments in the cities of Zagreb, Bjelovar, Osijek, Slavonski Brod and Grubisno Polje.
For every person, and with his cooperation and agreement, the Multidisciplinary Expert Team (special educator/coordinator, psychologist, social worker, medical nurse) develops a Person Centred Program. The MET is also responsible for implementing the program for each client, educating the assisting staff (care giver), monitoring and follow-up of the progress the person makes and supporting the person in the process of inclusion into the life of the local community.
